This is much closer to the way Lego sets were when I grew up. You can, of course, buy the bulk Lego sets, but I find those boxes provide too many 2x4 bricks and not enough of the one-stud wide bricks and other key elements (like angled roof pieces). Creator sets like this one provide a great mix of very useful pieces, often in colors that are hard to find. And because these come with directions for multiple builds, they encourage rebuilding and experimentation.This year's first Creator house is a tidy little log cabin (there is another house, #5771 Hillside House, arriving later in the year, as well as a lighthouse island, #5770). However, as a set, it is a somewhat fast and easy build - my 7 year old daughter was able to build it on her own with very little assistance from me in about 2 hours. The cabin is very sturdy once built, for Legos of course. Because the cabin is formed like a house, it is a simple structure to put your mind around, and I think would be an excellent first set for a child that has never used Lego's before, but may be interested in them.
