5.0 out of 5 stars Possibly the best non-motorized LEGO Technic construction vehicle since 8455, April 12, 2011

8069 is an excellent design in terms of functionality. The philosophy behind this design appears to be maximum functionality with the fewest parts. 8069 may not be nearly as good looking as the LEGO TECHNIC Front Loader 8265 from 2009 or the LEGO Technic Excavator from 2008, but it has a lot of neat tricks up its sleeve.

The new compact (mini) linear actuators (mLAs) introduced with this model perform smoothly. Mechanically, these appear to be a much better fit for manually operated Technics designs. Unlike the larger fully encapsulated linear actuator designs that were introduced with the 8294, mLAs don't require you to turn the knobs forever to get a useful range of... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars LEGO Technic Backhoe Loader 8069, September 9, 2011

I bought it for the parts to begin with, especially the new mini actuators but soon realised after completing the set that it would be a while before I plucked up the courage to take it apart. Its still in the living room (much to my wifes annoyance) where my daughter and I have a go at digging up the carpet every couple of days!
The set is crammed with functional components with seperate winding points for each moving element. These include steering, front bucket tip and raise, backhoe arm raise, extend and slew. The rear outriggers are manual as well but use a simple lever to lock them down in position. This does lift the rear wheels of the floor and makes the set really stable when digging into a pile of bricks.
Its not just the small actuators that are new, theres four new bricks in there that are going to become a 'must have' element for the advanced / expert builders brick pile.
The new mini actuators are really strong and bring a new level of scale for the Lego... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Near perfection, July 4, 2012

It's a great kit full of amazing details ranging from side mirrors to having the smoke stack be a turning mechanism. It's a perfect kit except for a few nit picks.

The back hoe is kinda loose in the horizontal motion, so it swings a bit in the center position. Also the motion on the back hoe, while impressive (particularly in gearing), is somewhat limited. The bucket can not be independently moved and the range of motions is fairly confined. It also takes a crazy long time to adjust it. The pro is you can adjust it very precisely for display.

I especially like the safety legs on the side; however, you are a bit limited range of motion if you wanted to lower the front bucket to dig it into the ground and lift off the wheels as you would in real life.

A detail I would have liked to seen is the operators chair being able to rotate/switch from facing forward or backwards.

A few of these things I've been able to improve upon using some extra... Read more
