The mat (vinyl) is brightly colored and somewhat padded. The four corners are creased and fold up to form a square box. Then there is a separate lid to pop on the top. There are straps on the sides to keep the lid on. I think for a 3 to 7 year old who likes dinosaurs it is a great gift. They can take the toys with them in the car, to a friends house, outside to play. Having the box and lid, I assume, encourages the child to put their toys in it to carry them around.
