This is a partially redesigned version of set 10213 which Lego released in 2010. The set proved very popular, so after considering the feedback Lego received, they decided to redesign parts of it in order to make it a bit more durable for play. So 10231, released in the summer of 2011, is largely a strengthened 10213. The main changes are to the main fuel tank, landing gear, Canadarm, and cargo doors. Most of the changes are small, but the change to the main fuel tank is large, adding a long gray assembly between the SRBs and the main fuel tank. This makes the vehicle stronger but visually less realistic (if that is important to you).

If your child is a space enthusiast, this set really is a must. It is also a good deal considering the quantity and variety of parts included. Between this set and the other big space set this year, #3368 Space Center, both are very good, but the shuttle set is more intricate, a bit harder to build, and more historically significant. Both sets... Read more

I bought this for my husband as one of his birthday gifts since he loved Legos as a child. It is such fun and takes time to build but its still enjoyable even for an adult. It does have a lot of pieces and the manual is 2 books so it is time consuming but perfect now for the approaching winter months.

Well, I bought this because I loved Legos as a kid & have been sick and grumpy all week. I was
as excited as Christmas morning when I opened it up on Saturday morning; the box was huge,
bigger than it looked in the Lego store at the mall. Inside the pieces were distributed between
a large number of stiff, crinkly clear plastic bags. I dumped a few of the smaller bags into some
bins (I'm way more organized than when I was little), left the larger bags closed until I needed
something out of them, and started building.

Hours passed. This set has probably three times the pieces of the most complex set I'd built before,
something like the Blacktron Alpha Centauri Outpost, and nearly five times the pieces of my favorite
set of all time, the amazing Blacktron Aerial Intruder. Saturday ended and I was halfway done!

The next morning I finished the orbiter, external tank, and baseplate/stand. My older sister built the
