4.0 out of 5 stars Love Technic, lukewarm on this set, January 26, 2011

Four stars? Yes, I know. All Lego products deserve five stars. And if you look at my other reviews, you'll find plenty of high ratings for Lego, especially the small-size Technic sets. These sets are great, even for younger builders, as they exhibit mechanical functions in a simple and direct way. They also hold together better than their brick-built cousins.

This set falls short in the playability department. It has a knob to control the steering, and there is a single spring that allows for both front and back suspension. On the whole however, the kids have not been terribly interested in playing with it. They much prefer some of the other Technic vehicles that have more functions. For example, they really enjoy the two sets that bracket this one (8065 and 8067). That said, one of the values of Lego is that it can be rebuilt; my kids have already taken apart the Jeep and started building it into unrecognizable contraptions. There is merit in something that... 5.0 out of 5 stars Kudos to Lego Technics Engineers!, September 17, 2011

I bought this for a friend's 8yo grandson and this is what my friend told me:

----
Thank you very very much for this gift.

We couldnt wait to open the 8066 as soon as we received it from the mail (June30).
I let Vg build the Off-Roader by himself, guiding him minimally and observing his feeling of achievement and his awe at the finished Off-Roader. The puzzle is easy, simple and beautiful.

Two days later, I disassembled it and let him do the Buggy model. This time, however, I got more interested at the puzzle. As I watched, I realized that the LEGO engineers who designed this puzzle (and for sure all the Technics Kits) are geniuses of the mechanical field. This is not a simple toy just for a kid. Yes a kid would appreciate the moving parts but a curious adult would be amazed at the demonstration of principles of mechanical tools that we learned in grade school.

The Buggy kit has demonstrated the use of the wedge as well as the... Read more

Although Technic Lego items are usually quite a bit more difficult than Lego's regular sets, this one doesn't follow it's roommates in Technic land. It's actually quite simple to assemble, and has quite a few neat attributes, i.e. steering wheel that actually moves, large heavy-duty truck-like wheels that turn, etc. This guy took my experienced builder about 30 minutes to assemble, so keep that in mind if buying for a new Lego fan. These technic sets are great for understanding the engineering of engines and overall mechanics and this set does that nicely with the definitive drivetrain. Just a really neat set, it's appreciated greatly in this house. Highly recommend!
