Like everything Lego the design can be customized, and the pieces can be used with other sets to make other toys. Lego says it best when they dub their products as "a new toy everyday". The plastic is high quality ABS made with such precision that the pieces fit together even after many years of use. This particular model has a clever interacting feature that when the car bumps with an object, the driver is launched in the air as a result of the collision, pretty neat feature that my 7 year old son loves:) Amazingly, the toy does not come apart while crashing like you would expect a Lego toy would do.
